In this educational and entertaining One Book, One Community program, folk musician and storyteller Rik Palieri explains the life of a Polish mountaineer and demonstrates traditional Polish instruments. This fun-filled family oriented program will be held at the Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC), Lancaster campus, Main Building, Room 222 on Tuesday, March 21 at 6:30 pm. Doors open at 6:00 pm. HACC Lancaster Campus is located at 1641 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, PA 17602. Admission is free. A free will offering will help offset expenses.
Rik Palieri lives in Vermont and has
traveled the world to educate people with his storytelling and music. His mother is Polish and he shared how he developed an interest in Polish music and culture. “One day in the late 70’s, I came across a photo of a Polish Bagpiper in an old National Geographic. After a long search I found a set of Polish pipes and was later invited to perform at the 1980 Rzeszow world festival in Poland.” At the festival, Rik won a contest, met Polish piper Jozef Broda, and was awarded the title of “Outstanding Solo Musician”.
Rik later received a fellowship to study the Polish Bagpipe. He lived high up on the mountains in the village of Istebna, a folk community in southern Poland. In Istebna, he learned the secrets of piping from Broda and the last remaining pipers. He also learned to play the wooden flute, clay ocarina and long wooden trumpet.
