Rock Your Socks Off Fundraiser

Looking for a local event that will be fun for the whole family?

The Milanof-Schock Library in Mount Joy is throwing a super-fun, music-inspired, family-friendly, dance-party fundraiser in the library on Saturday, February 24 from 4 – 6pm.

Local DJ Stan Tucker will be spinning tunes of the decades and testing parents’ rock music memories with music trivia! The Library invites attendees to dress in costume to represent a favorite music era (optional) and jump in the costume parade! Enter the Limbo contest and get goofy with sing-a-longs! Anyone interested in attending can brush up on music trivia, do some stretching to get ready for a little limbo (optional), practice your dance moves, and mark your calendars for some family fun!

Tickets can be pre-purchased and are available at the Library’s front desk for $3 each that includes all of the previously mentioned entertainment (and MORE!) as well as a slice of pizza and a drink. Additional food will be available at the event for an additional cost (while supplies last). Bring a little extra spending money to participate in raffles or to purchase something from the souvenir shop! All proceeds from the event help the Library!

May 6th is Comic Book Day @ local public libraries in Lancaster County!

Lancaster County’s Public libraries will have comic books to give away on Saturday, May 6th from 9:00 am – 8:00 pm compliments of The Comic Store in Lancaster, which is also hosting a day of FREE comic books at their McGovern Avenue location!

Thanks to Joe Miller, owner of The Comic Store, teens and tweens at public libraries in Lancaster County have received free comic books since 2005.  Last year The Comic Store collected over $1300.00 for the local libraries. Each customer who visits the store receives one free comic book. For each additional copy, we request that a donation of 50 cents is collected at the register. All of the donated money will be used to buy graphic novels and books for the Lancaster County libraries.

Two years ago, The Comic Store won the National Award of Best Charity from Diamond Comic Distributors for its efforts in sponsoring this fund-raiser.

Ed Miller, Special Services Manager in charge of Bookmobile services countywide is very enthusiastic about this annual Comic Book Day promotion. He sees the value that graphic novels hold for teens, “For some of the teenagers that we see, graphic novels are the only literature that they will look at — and yes, comic books can be serious literature. We are extremely grateful for the assistance that Joe Miller gives to support library outreach to teens!”

Comic books are an original American art form, fun to read, with diverse story lines that capture the imagination. Public libraries have graphic novels for young readers, middle grades and up. Teens and “tweens’ are encouraged to visit their local public library on May 6th and also to visit The Comic Store to take advantage of this incentive!

Retirement Community to hold a Rock-A-Thon Fundraiser for the Bookmobile

The residents at the Zerbe Retirement Community love the Bookmobile! When they learned that the current Bookmobile was in need of replacement, they immediately went to work in planning an event that would help the cause and give special meaning to their residents.   They have organized a Rock-A-Thon that will happen on Friday, April 7 from 2:00 – 4:00 pm at the Zerbe Retirement Community located at 2499 Zerbe Road, Narvon, PA 17555.  Participating residents and staff will rock in rocking chairs for 30-minute intervals.  The ‘rockers’ are looking for sponsors and they are confident that by asking 5 people to each donate $20 in support for their rocking time, they will help raise much-needed funds to help purchase the bookmobile.

Cheryl Heineman, Activities Director, headed the project with the same level of enthusiasm as the residents. She said, “We really love our bookmobile and want to support it any way we can!”

To sign up and join in the Rock-A-Thon fun, call 717-445-4551 and ask for Kristen Groff. All donation checks should be made payable to The Library System of Lancaster County.  Refreshments will be served during the event.
