Ryan comes to us from the Boone Area Library in Birdsboro, PA, where he served as library director. Ryan comes to us with almost 20 years of library experience. Most of Ryan’s library career has been with the Seattle Public Library. Ryan has worked in the library field in many different capacities, from circulation desk duties, to program planning, to assistant manager and directorship. Ryan has worked in both public and academic libraries. Before moving into the library field, Ryan taught history at the college level.

Ryan McCrory, New Director of The Littiz Public LIbraryOriginally from Alabama, Ryan received his BA in History from Athens State College and his MA in History from the University of Alabama. Ryan will receive his Master of Information Science from Drexel University in June of 2020. Ryan currently lives in Pottstown, PA, but is looking to relocate to Lancaster County. He really enjoys the Lititz area and loves that the town is walkable. Ryan enjoys playing online video games with his 13 year old son. He also enjoys various sports, genealogy research and is a reader of non-fiction and James Lee Burke mysteries.

Ryan began his love of libraries back in elementary school when he helped his school librarian to shelve books. He has been a library user and enthusiast his entire life. He believe that libraries offer “free and equal access to information” for everyone. He feels that libraries serve the function of “democratizing information”. Ryan loves libraries because they are “always evolving” and “provide access to new technologies” for the community they serve. Ryan will begin his career with the Lititz Public Library on Monday, April 29th. Ryan wants to let the community know that he has an open door policy and encourages the community to stop by the library to say hello. Please help us to welcome him to our library and our community.

The Vader’s Fifth 501 Legion Garrison Carida was such a huge hit last year that they are returning this year with even more Star Wars characters! We expect a whole plethora of cosplay characters to be visiting our store and parking lot, including Batman, Batgirl, and Steampunk Wonder Woman. Make plans now to visit our store May 4th!!

As always, each customer receives one free comic book. For each additional copy we request that a donation of 50 cents be collected at the register. All of the donated money will be used to buy graphic novels and books for the Lancaster County Public libraries.

Last year The Comic Store collected over $1300.00 for the local libraries.  Four years ago, The Comic Store won the National Award of Best Charity from Diamond Comic Distributors for its efforts in sponsoring this fund-raiser.

Lancaster County’s Public libraries will also have comic books to give away (while supplies last).  Teens and tweens at public libraries in Lancaster County have received free comic books since 2005.

Ed Miller, Special Services Manager in charge of Bookmobile services countywide is very enthusiastic about this annual Comic Book Day promotion. He sees the value that graphic novels hold for teens, “For some of the teenagers that we see, graphic novels are the only literature that they will look at — and yes, comic books can be serious literature. We are extremely grateful for the assistance that Joe Miller gives to support library outreach to teens!”

The Lancaster County Board of Commissioners delivered a proclamation at their April 3rd meeting announcing that Lancaster County Public Libraries will be celebrating National Library Week from April 7 – 13, 2019.  The annual celebration highlights the valuable role libraries, librarians, and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening our communities.

Lancaster County Board of Commissioners Procalim National Library Week: April 7-13, 2019
Public Library Directors gather as Lancaster County’s Board of Commissioners deliver 2019 National Library Week Proclamation.

This year’s theme, Libraries = Strong Communities, illustrates how today’s libraries are at the heart of our communities, providing critical resources, programs and expertise. Our libraries are more than book repositories! They also provide a public space where the public, regardless of age, culture or income level, can come together to connect and learn. Elected officials, small business owners, students, and the public at large depend upon libraries and the resources they offer to meet the needs of their communities. By providing resources such as eBooks and technology courses, English as a Second Language (ESL) materials, job development programs or safe spaces, libraries and librarians are leading in their communities.

Public Libraries encourage giving with their Annual Mitten Tree Project!

Mitten Tree 19th Annual Campaign

Public Libraries throughout Lancaster County will hold their 19th annual Mitten Tree Campaign beginning on Monday, November 19. Librarians from the county’s public libraries, in the spirit of holiday giving, will be collecting new mittens, gloves, hats, scarves, earmuffs and umbrellas that will benefit children & families in need living in Lancaster County. Several of the public libraries in Lancaster County will participate in this year’s project. Items will also be collected on the Bookmobile.

Donations may be made from Monday, November 19 – Friday, December 14, 2018.

The Mitten Tree project has been hugely successful during the past eighteen years. Each year the project has netted between 4000-5000 donations, many of which are hand-knitted items!  Distribution of the donations will benefit children and families in churches and service agencies located in local library communities.

Amy M. Campbell, Children & Youth Director of Quality Assurance, said of the project, “Lancaster County Children and Youth is blessed to be in a community that cares about others. The Mitten Tree project reaches many of the families we serve, meeting a need that some may take for granted–warmth. Families come into our office for assistance and are able to leave with hats, gloves and scarfs to fend off the harsh temperatures of winter. All thanks to the generosity of the Mitten Tree Project.”

Individuals interested in participating should bring new, unwrapped mittens, gloves, hats, scarves, umbrellas and earmuffs to any of the public library locations during their hours of operation. Call your local public library at the following locations [see list below].

Columbia Public Library to welcome Pennsylvania Secretary of Education at its Dedication Ceremony

Columbia Public Library New Logo

New Columbia Public Library

Columbia Public Library officials are pleased to announce that the Dedication Ceremony of the newly renovated Library is scheduled for Sunday, August 12, at 2:00 p.m. at the library location on 24 South Sixth Street, Columbia, PA 17512. The Dedication Ceremony culminates the combined efforts of library board members, the capital campaign committee, library staff and numerous volunteers in the community—all who worked together to make the dream of the stunning new library a reality. The event will also feature a special guest—Pedro A. Rivera, Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Education, who will present a keynote address at the community’s dedication of their new library. As Secretary of Education, Rivera has a strong interest in successful collaborations between school districts and public libraries.

The Columbia Public Library has enjoyed a successful collaboration between the Columbia School District for the past fifteen years. This collaborative success is credited to Lisa Greybill, Library Director, and Mr. John Black, principal at Park Elementary School, which is located next door to the library. “Mr. Black is absolutely wonderful to work with”, said Greybill. “He generously allows us the use of the school gym for Summer Reading programs in order to accommodate all who attend”. In addition, Greybill works in tandem with Mrs. Kelsey Bucks, Park Elementary librarian. Visits to the public library are part of Mrs. Bucks’ curriculum for her students. Greybill also works with superintendent, Tom Strickler and high school librarian, Michael White. “Columbia Borough School District is made up of wonderful people who truly support their public library”, Greybill added.

In today’s ever-changing world, a lot is happening in libraries. Libraries are not just about books; they also provide access to information beyond items that are checked out on a library card.   Libraries act as gateways to information, education, and opportunity — and the Columbia Public Library is no exception.   Not only has the library undergone a major expansion and renovation, but the Columbia Public Library as a whole is now transformed itself into a community and technology hub.  The library is improving the community through access to books and technology that individuals might otherwise be unable to afford.  In addition to books in a number of formats — including e-books, audiobooks, and online resources — there are a number of programs offered that appeal to all ages.

About Pedro Rivera

PA Secretary of Education, Pedro A. RiveraPedro A. Rivera was nominated by Governor Tom Wolf to serve as the Secretary of Education on January 20, 2015, and was confirmed by the state Senate in June 2015. He joined the Wolf Administration after having served as Superintendent of The School District of Lancaster, a position he held from 2008-2015.

Under Rivera’s leadership, The School District of Lancaster developed and implemented a new curriculum, an aggressive professional development plan, and innovative classroom observation tools. These initiatives resulted in an increased graduation rate, notable improvements in math, science and writing proficiency scores, and enhanced the level of participation from high-performing students in programs that help prepare them for college and other post-graduation opportunities. In September 2014, Rivera was honored by the White House as a Champion of Change for his efforts to transform urban education – one of ten recipients nationwide to receive the prestigious honor.

He brings extensive experience in public education to his role as a member of Governor Wolf’s cabinet and has spent his entire career helping students. Prior to serving as superintendent of The School District of Lancaster, he served as a classroom teacher, staff member with the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, assistant principal, principal, and executive director for the School District of Philadelphia.

Rivera is a first generation college graduate and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from The Pennsylvania State University, a Master’s degree in Education Administration from Cheney University, and his Superintendent’s Letter of Eligibility from Arcadia University.

The Columbia Public Library would like to thank all of the contractors and donors who have helped make the newly renovated library a reality. Anyone interested in supporting the library, can make a tax deductible donation online at www.columbiapubliclibrary.org, by mail at 24 South Sixth Street, Columbia, PA 17512, or in person when the library re-opens. For more information or discuss how you can help, call 717-575-9032 or rgamby@columbiapubliclibrary.org.
