LANCASTER, PA – CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health and the Library System of Lancaster County are proud to present the third-annual Brush Twice-A-Day Challenge, a FREE educational program designed to encourage children to create and maintain healthy oral hygiene habits. This 10-week initiative begins Sept. 10, 2018 and runs through Dec. 10, 2018 and is open to all children and families throughout Lancaster County. Families interested in participating may pick up materials at any of the 17 public libraries throughout Lancaster County or visit the library’s Bookmobile.

“The Brush Twice-A-Day Challenge is a unique and fun way to help inspire children to take time out for their health leading to a lifetime of healthy habits and smiles,” said Lori McCracken, director of education at CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health. “This is a great FREE program for children throughout Lancaster County.”

Children who register to participate will receive a free Health Hero Starter Pack. The Health Hero Starter Pack includes a toothbrush, toothpaste, caregiver information and ten “Smile Counter” scratch-off cards designed to help children track brushing progress at home. Hank the Health Hero will be making appearances throughout the 10 weeks the program runs at libraries throughout the county.

“As an organization committed to fostering and nurturing the well-being of our community, we are proud to partner again with CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health to bring the Brushing Challenge to children throughout Lancaster County,” said Bonnie Young, executive director for the Library System of Lancaster County. “This fun and educational program has been a wonderful way to encourage healthy habits for our youngest community members.”

The Brush Twice-A-Day Challenge is one of many ways CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health strives to improve the overall health and well-being of children and families in the Lancaster community. The organization’s mission encompasses multiple efforts such as educational programs as well as services including two Dental Centers, a Behavioral Health Center and the recently announced St. John Neumann School for Children and Families planned to open in 2020 – all which serve children regardless of their insurance or ability to pay.

Public Libraries receive Music for Everyone Grant to enhance library programs for youth!

Music For Everyone

The Library System on behalf of public libraries throughout Lancaster County was awarded a grant from Music for Everyone Foundation in the amount of $1,216.00 that will be used to support the acquisition of percussion instruments to enhance library programs.  The musical instrument collection is available to all public youth librarians, Be Ready Rover program coordinator and the Bookmobile staff.  Libraries are hosting “Together We Are Music” events, and other music-oriented programming for youth and families this summer and in the future.

Library programs and library outreach supports children’s learning and creative needs by giving them access to materials (instruments) and opportunities. Using their imagination, children will learn about tempo and volume, creatively express themselves and perform in a non-judgmental atmosphere.

Music for Everyone Fun logoPercussion instruments made available through this grant funding include xylophones, egg shakers, rhythm sticks, log drums, hand drums, and band bongos.

Percussion InstrumentsThe instruments are a resource for year round programs and a welcome addition to supporting the role that a library has in the community–being accessible and fulfilling the needs and interests of residents of the county. In these library settings, coming together socially, a child will delight in making music with others.

Research shows there are many benefits to playing percussion instruments. For the youngest, music builds emergent literacy skills (i.e. phonological). Children develop better verbal memory and reading ability, along with better motor coordination, motor development (exercising hands, fingers, and arms), mood improvement, listening skills, taking turns, happiness in being creative, social skills, and more.

Renee Christiansen, youth services manager, acknowledges the value of the partnership that has been established with MFE over the years, “I applaud the success of Music for Everyone for bringing musical opportunities to many, so that in turn, organizations such as libraries can promote the creative development of our local youth.”

The Music for Everyone Foundation is committed to supporting music as a positive impact in the community by awarding grants to schools and community groups to support music programs. The foundation, through their grant program, is committed to easing the financial difficulties that music programs face due to funding cuts.  The MFE Foundation raises money through live music events, merchandising efforts and donations.  Since April 2006, MFE has awarded over $1.5 Million in grants, scholarships and direct program support to schools and community arts groups in Lancaster County.

Public Libraries in Lancaster County will celebrate Pennsylvania’s One Book Every Young Child Campaign with Author Visits!

2018_OBEYC_logo

Lancaster County’s public libraries will participate in the 13th annual One Book, Every Young Child statewide early learning initiative, to highlight both the importance of early literacy development in preschoolers, ages 3-6 years and specifically the vital role that adults have fostering that development.

Special Story Times will be offered at all of the public libraries in Lancaster County from April 3 through May 29.  There will also be special Author Visits on May 3, 2018.  (See schedules below for Author Visits and Storytimes!)

The initiative is a collaborative effort of Pennsylvania public libraries, museums, early childcare centers and other youth-oriented associations in the Commonwealth. This year’s book selection is My Cousin Momo written and illustrated by Zachariah OHora.  Published in 2015 by Dial Books, this book is for children ages 3 to 5.

Early learning starts in Pennsylvania’s Public Libraries. During story time, youth librarians foster early childhood literacy and school readiness skills. Now in its 13th year, One Book, Every Young Child is a valuable program that highlights the importance of early literacy development in preschoolers and the significance of reading early and often to children, as well as engaging them in conversation and other activities around books.

The program has remained successful in part due to the partnership of collaborating agencies that all support early childhood literacy efforts. They worked together to develop this multifaceted program which is accessible to all areas and populations of the state.

Public Librarians during the reading of the book, engage children in open-ended discussion about the story line and characters, introduce new vocabulary, talk about alphabet letters and make a point that reading books builds a critical foundation of knowledge, readying a child for school. Encouragement is given to parents to “Read to One’s Child Every Day”.

Libraries have additional copies of My Cousin Momo for parents and caregivers to borrow.

picture of squirrel with camera around neck - cover image for "my cousin Momo"About the 2018 Book Selection: My Cousin Momo
When a flying squirrel arrives for a visit with relatives, carrying his suitcase, wearing a camera around his neck, and sporting a pink T-shirt and aqua-and-yellow running shoes, he fails to impress his two cousins and their many forest friends. He’s too shy to fly for them, and he doesn’t know how to play superheroes, hide-and-seek, or acorn-pong. The cousins are frustrated by Momo’s behavior (one cousin kicks a mushroom), but when they follow their parents’ advice to “Give him some time” and “Just make him feel welcome,” they modify the rules of their games so Momo feels included. OHora’s stylized illustrations are humorous (Momo dresses as “Muffin Man” when playing superheroes) and touching (he cries as he packs his suitcase, wanting to go home). VERDICT Many children will relate to Momo’s situation as he faces new surroundings and experiences and will be relieved when his cousins finally accept him for who he is. ~Tanya Boudreau, Cold Lake Public Library, AB, Canada

The Reviews Are In…

This project is made possible by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services as administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Education through the Office of Commonwealth Libraries.

There also will be traveling trunks developed by early childhood educators to help expand upon the concepts in My Cousin Momo. Each trunk is filled with fun book-related activities, games and manipulatives for young children that align with Pennsylvania’s Learning Standards for Early Childhood.
