The Manheim Community Library is pleased to announce new July programs created by their Summer Interns! The three newly appointed interns have created the following programs by utilizing their own unique talents. These events will help the community learn, connect and grow, as the interns gain valuable experience and a broad understanding of library work under the mentorship of Library staff.
2019 Summer Reading Program: A Universe of Stories Youth Services Intern: Nina Bonanno
The Youth Services Intern will assist youth librarian Colleen Gergely with the Library’s popular Summer Reading program. More than 900 children participate each year. Enthusiastic, creative and tireless, the Youth Services intern supervises, executes and cleans-up after most of the Library’s summer programs and activities for youth, promoting reading, library use, and curiosity. Responsibilities also include enhancing the children’s area of the library to create a welcoming destination for families.
Apollo 11 Oral History Project – July 6, 8, and 9 between 2:00 and 5:00 PM
July 20, 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. To commemorate the historic event, Manheim Community Library has created an oral history project under the direction of Digital Creation Intern Caden McMahan. The community is invited to share their memories of this historic event. Brief personal interviews will be conducted on July 6th, 8th, and 9th between 2 and 5 PM at the Library. Recorded memories will be compiled into a presentation, featured in social media, as well as archived. Appointments are encouraged but walk-ins will be welcome as space allows. The Library welcomes interest from outside organizations for possible collaborations for this memory project.
Electronic Music Class – Class Tuesdays from 3:00 to 5:00 PM and Open Workshop Thursdays from 2:00 to 5:00 PM, July 16 through August 8
Join us for a 4 week basic introduction to the creation of music using only an online computer program called Audiotool. We will learn about synthesizing sounds, creating beats, and utilizing samples to create an entire electronic track from scratch. Audiotool is free and accessible from any computer, so you can continue to work on your tracks at home once the class is finished. If you like both technology and music, then this is the right class for you! Bring headphones and a laptop if possible, but if necessary we can provide you with these. This class is taught by Digital Creation Intern Caden McMahan. Ages 10+. This program will run from July 16 to August 8. There will be 2-hour class sessions each Tuesday from 3 to 5 PM and an open workshop for individual assistance each Thursday from 2 to 5 PM. You can get caught up on any classes you miss in these workshops.
Gender and Sexuality Alliance – July 22 @ 6:00 PM
Manheim Community Library invites teens and interested supporters to join us in kicking off our new Gender and Sexuality Alliance on Monday, July 22nd at 6 PM. Snacks will be provided. Registration is appreciated to help us plan but walk-ins are welcome!
GSA is a popular club among schools around the country which serves as a support system for LGBTQ+ teens, and is a platform for them to incite change in their communities. LGBTQ+ Allies are also encouraged to join and learn more about proper terminology and acceptance. The club will be a fun, safe space for teens to get to know each other and talk about social issues related to the LGBTQ+ community. Members will get to decide what they want the focus of the club to be and to organize projects based on the club’s goals. The kickoff for the Library’s GSA will be run by intern Eva Hain as part of the Library’s participation in the Public Library Association’s Inclusive Internship Initiative. So please stop by, bring a friend, and be ready to brainstorm!
